• <H3> In June of 2013, during a special legislative session Texas lawmakers began drafting legislation aimed at restricting where and when abortions could take place in an effort to protect the women of the state.  Senate Bill 5, was titled “Relating to the regulation of abortion procedures, providers, and facilities; providing penalties.”  This was a fantastic move; however, it was met with stiff opposition.     On the last day of the special legislative session the legislature began the final votes needed to pass the law.   As voting took place on the house floor abortion supporters flooded the chambers, they clapped, chanted and screamed in an effort to disrupt voting.  They were successful.  The senate voted 19 for and 11 against the bill, however the votes were tallied too late, it was after midnight (after the end of the special session) and therefore the vote was invalid.     The governor’s office soon announced that there would be a second special legislative session.  Pro Life groups throughout the country took notice, and those based in Texas began mobilizing.  Organizations such as the Texas Alliance for Life, Texas Right to Life,  and the Texas Catholic Conference began flooding social media, the internet, radio and any medium available in an attempt to mobilize Pro Lifers.  Pro Lifers were encouraged to travel to Austin, Texas to flood the state capitol and show their support for these laws.  The second special session began and House Bill 2 was introduced, identical to the previous bill, tensions at the capitol were still heated.     On Tuesday, July 9, 2013, a small group from Del Rio caravanned to the state capitol.  They participated in prayer sessions, petitioned their representatives, and attended church services.  They helped flood the house chambers with Pro Life supporters and just after midnight witnessed the Texas State House pass HB 2.  That Friday, (July 12) the bill went on to the Senate, where it also passed and was soon signed into law.       When it was all said and done there was both a victory and a defeat; though the law passed, we learned that those elected officials who represent our area voted against the law.  In many ways that day and the events which were witnessed touched each person who was there.  A few of that group returned with a stronger resolve to get organized and to do something.  The example set by the larger Pro Life groups demonstrated how it is possible to affect positive change.  It was clear that Del Rio needed a local Pro Life group to keep the local community informed and when necessary get them mobilized.  In the next few months Del Rio for Life was born.     With its public launch on Facebook on November 30, 2013, the group began planning their first public event.  On Sunday, January 26, a few days after the Roe v. Wade anniversary (January 22nd), Del Rio for Life organized and hosted the first March for Life in Del Rio in over 25 years.  The event was a huge success.     Del Rio for Life is focused on protecting the sanctity of human life.  Though we may face challenges and defeats along the way, DR4L will remain committed until the sanctity of every human life is recognized and protected.  You can expect DR4L to keep you informed of Pro Life legislation and news, host more Pro Life events, promote local Crisis Pregnancy resources and spread the message of life through outreach and education.  Although DR4L will never endorse any candidate or political party, you can expect us to keep you informed of where your elected officials stand on life issues in order to keep them accountable.
